【New Delhi】Employee costs for the universe witnessed a modest increase in the December 2008 quarter compared with the September quarter, thanks mainly to hikes for public sector companies in the metals, oil or banking sectors as they began reflecting higher wages in anticipation of wage agreements due since January 2007 in many cases. However 40 per cent of companies have slashed employee costs. Realty, financial services, automobiles and retail are some of the notable sectors that saw employee costs shrinking on a sequential basis.

【New Delhi】The new report of Labour Bureau pegged job losses in the organised sector of the economy during October- January at 5.89 lakh. After scorching export-related sectors, job losses are spreading fast to domestic units across the organised segments of the manufacturing and service sectors. Moreover, the lay-offs in the unorganised segments, which constitute over 90 per cent of the total labour force, could be much higher.
