【Mumbai】Global marketplace Amazon today (Jan 05, 2017) said that the seller base on Amazon.in grew by 160 per cent in 2016 from the previous year.
In line with its vision "to transform the way India buys and sells through its innovations, technology support and seller-centric services", Amazon.in till date has attracted over 140,000 sellers (160 per cent year-on-year growth) across India to the marketplace, Amazon said in a statement here.
Amazon's Global Selling program also witnessed tremendous success in 2016 by empowering over 18,000 Indian sellers to offer over 25 million 'Made in India' products to Amazon's worldwide customers.
○Flipkart logistics arm suffers massive Rs 810-crore loss
【New Delhi/ Bengaluru】Flipkart’s supply chain and logistics arm Instakart Services or Ekart Logistics has incurred losses of Rs 810 crore on a revenue of Rs 303 crore in the nine months to March, its first year of operation, after the Indian e-commerce major spun it off as a separate unit, people familiar with the development said.
The logistics arm losses come over and above the Rs 2,850 crore losses its two entities — Flipkart India and Flipkart Internet —showed for FY16.
Ekart is making an aggressive push towards its strategy of getting third party clients in 2017 after fixing internal performance issues in 2016. Ekart has set a target of generating 50% of the business from external clients in two years, which currently stands at 10%. While externalisation has been on the agenda of Binny Bansal since he took over as CEO in January 2016, the first priority for the company last year was improving customer experience.
○Need to bring down entry-level smartphone price to $30: Pichai
【Kharagpur】Google chief Sundar Pichai on Thursday (05-01-17) said the prices of entry-level smartphones in India need to come down further to around USD 30 to improve people's access to the Internet and digital services.
As of date, entry level smartphone prices in India are around Rs. 4,000-5,000. Mr. Pichai, who was speaking at IIT-Kharagpur, said the focus was also on areas such as local language support and improving connectivity in India.
Chennai-born chief executive officer of Google Sundar Pichai said the country’s digital economy must reach its potential for local Internet companies to be competitive. And said that "the next big" global software companies to come from India in the next five to 10 years.
Admitting that he used to bunk classes during his engineering days at IIT Kharagpur, Google CEO Sundar Pichai today expressed surprise to find young IITians aiming to get into IIMs even as he stressed on the importance of getting real world experience.
On Wednesday, in an interaction with ET’s Surabhi Agarwal and TV Mahalingam, Pichai spoke about the pace of change in India, the impact of increasing protectionism across the world and the importance of India for Google. "Over time you will see more India-developed global products."
