【New York】Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif accused nuclear-armed rival India on the 21st September of putting unacceptable conditions on dialogue with Islamabad and said the world would ignore the dangers of rising tensions in South Asia at its own peril.
Sharif told the annual United Nations General Assembly Pakistan could not ignore India’s “unprecedented” arms build-up and would “take whatever measures are necessary to maintain credible deterrence.”
India has accused Pakistan of being behind a deadly attack on an army base in the disputed Kashmir region on Sunday in which 18 soldiers were killed and said it had the right to respond when and where it chose. Pakistan has rejected the allegation and accused India of apportioning blame before the incident had been investigated properly.
○Sharif tries to internationalise Kashmir issue at UNGA
【New York】Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has raised the Kashmir issue with almost every world leader he has held talks with on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session, but his efforts to internationalise the dispute with India appeared to have gained no traction.
Mr. Sharif raised the issue with the leaders of the U.S., the U.K, Japan and Turkey and sought their intervention to resolve the matter. He met Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in United Nations on Tuesday.
Sharif devoted much of his 20-minute speech at the UN General Assembly session to Kashmir and the current situation in the valley and said Pakistan "fully supports the demand of the Kashmiri people for self-determination". He glorified slain Hizbul commander Burhan Wani as a "young leader" even as he expressed readiness for a "serious and sustained dialogue" with India for peaceful resolution of all outstanding disputes, especially Jammu and Kashmir. He demanded an "independent inquiry into the extra- judicial killings" and a UN fact-finding mission to Kashmir "so that those guilty of these atrocities are punished."
○Pakistan PM consults army chief on Uri terror attack and Kashmir ahead of UNGA address
【Islamabad】Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has held a telephonic conversation with Pakistan's powerful army chief General Raheel Sharif ahead of his speech at the UN in which he is expected to raise the Kashmir issue, amid signs he may tone down his rhetoric to reduce tensions with India.
An official from the Prime Minister's Office said the two last night discussed the situation in Kashmir and tense relations with India after the terrorist attack on an Indian army camp in Uri on Sunday in which 18 soldiers were killed.
Sharif had a plan to forcefully highlight the Kashmir violence, but the scenario changed after Uri terrorist attack which spotlighted the issue of cross-border militancy.
○OIC meet on Kashmir finds support from Turkey, Azerbaijan
【New Delhi】The OIC contact group on Jammu and Kashmir which held a special meet at New York, did not take note of the attack in Uri.
Official sources however told The Hindu that they have noted the strong support that Turkey and Azerbaijan extended to Pakistan during the meet which called for “cessation of violence” in Kashmir.
The meeting was attended by the member countries of OIC where Pakistan was represented by Sartaj Aziz, Advisor on Foreign Affairs of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
The Ministry of External Affairs is yet to formally respond to the staunch support extended by Turkey and Azerbaijan to Pakistan during the meet which criticised India.
