【New Delhi】Much of the Opposition, including the Congress, on the 20th of September issued their support to the government if it were to take any decision in the national interest in the wake of Sunday (18-09-16)'s terror attack in Uri in which 18 soldiers were killed.
However, the government struggled to rein one of its Members of Parliament and Sangh Parivar affiliates such as the Vishva Hindu Parishad from raising the temperature.
In related developments, the Army claimed that two infiltration attempts across the Line of Control in Kashmir were neutralised and 10 terrorists killed. One Indian Army soldier was also killed in the encounter. It said Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire and fired at Indian positions.
Government sources said Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) on Wednesday to review the Uri terror attack and decide on the government’s response.
○NIA suspects insider role in terror attack
【Srinagar/Uri】The National Investigation Agency (NIA), probing Sunday’s attack on an army installation in Uri, suspects the hand of an ‘insider’ in facilitating the entry of the militants into the brigade headquarters.
The NIA team, led by IGP Mukesh Singh, is camping in Uri, Baramulla, 102 km from here, for the past two days to probe the deadly fidayeen (suicide) attack, in which 18 army personnel were killed and 19 injured.
“During preliminary investigations, NIA sleuths have observed that the four fidayeen had sneaked into the highly fortified garrison along the Line of Control with possible support from the inside and proceeded straight to the barracks where the troops of the incoming 6-Bihar regiment and the outgoing 10-Dogra had been lodged,” a source told The Deccan Herald. “The timing is said to be the most crucial at an army camp as during the transit procedure fidayeen strike becomes easy,” the source added.
The four terrorists belonged to Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) managed to sneak in by cutting the perimeter fencing of the highly-guarded army installation at two places, investigations have shown.
In an indication that the terrorists were well-versed of the layout of the army base, the assailants locked the cooking room and store from outside to prevent the soldiers from leaving before setting them afire, sources privy to the probe said to The Economic Times.
○Lessons from Uri
【New Delhi】The September 18 attacks on the Indian army camp at Uri and subsequent infiltration attempts point to a new threat — the alarming ease with which Pakistan-sponsored terror groups have been able to penetrate Indian security installations.
It is indeed surprising that India has not learnt from its intelligence failings after terrorists stormed the Pathankot airforce base in January this year.
By all reliable accounts, the Jaish-e-Mohammad is the mastermind of both the Uri and Pathankot operations. Security analysts point out that JeM is the creation of Pakistan’s Inter-Service Intelligence. Therefore, it will not do for the Pakistan government to disown responsibility for such acts of terror.
○Govt okays deployment of 10k SPOs
【New Delhi】Strengthening the policing system in violence-hit Jammu and Kashmir, the Centre on the 21st of September cleared a proposal to recruit an additional 10,000 Special Police Officers (SPOs) for the state force.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh gave his approval for engaging SPOs in the Jammu and Kashmir Police, especially for the security related requirements, a Home Ministry spokesperson said.
There are currently 25,000 SPOs in Jammu and Kashmir. An SPO will initially draw a salary of Rs 5,000 per month, Rs 5,300 after completion of one year and Rs 6,000 after completion of three years.
