【Kolkata】Ms. Sharmila, who had withdrew her 16-year-long fast on August 9 and is expected to go on a tour to address public meetings in north, central and west India against imposition of the Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA), said that rather than isolating her, the Manipur society had in fact welcomed her decision to withdraw the fast, and thus she was having “the busiest days” of her life.
“I have been having interactions with young people every day in the hospital, five-seven in one time.. I am learning so much about what is happening, their angst for change, and, I see a hope that has strengthened my resolve,” she said.
A fortnight after being granted bail, activist Irom Sharmila (44) is on her way from hospital to “a yoga [and] meditation centre.”Putting speculation to rest, Ms. Sharmila said in an e-mail interview to The Hindu that she found a place in the Langol foothills in Imphal and would shift there on Friday. “It is a nature cure centre, not a hospital as such,” she said. “One can enrol and follow the routine set by the centre. But I am going to stay as an independent person, following my own routine. It will be for the first time that I will be stepping outside as a free person,” she said.
○I will not apologise for my remark: Ramya
【Bengaluru】In the backdrop of Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar claiming that “visiting Pakistan was like going to hell”, Actor-turned-politician Ms. Ramya, who had been to Pakistan for the SAARC Youth Summit, had described her experience as: “Pakistan is not hell. The people there are just like us. They treated us well.”On Monday (22-08-16), a private complaint was filed in the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Court at Somwarpet in Karnataka by advocate Katnamane Vittala Gowda, who claims to be Kodagu district president of a group called 'Prajaranga', had filed the complaint, seeking the slapping of sedition case against her.
Ramya, 33, belongs to the Congress, which governs Karnataka, has said that she will not apologise for her statement and it is important not to yield to her detractors.
A local court in Karnataka, hearing a private complaint against former MP Ramya aka Divya Spandana for her alleged pro-Pakistan remarks, on August 27 adjourned the matter to October 19 for next hearing.
○Cabinet clears surrogacy bill
【New Delhi】The Union Cabinet, on the 24th of August, cleared the Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill, 2016, banning commercial surrogacy in India.
The Bill also bars foreigners, homosexual couples, people in live-in relationships and single individuals, making only childless, straight Indian couple married for a minimum of five years eligible for surrogacy.
Eligible couples will have to turn to close relatives, not necessarily related by blood for altruistic surrogacy — where no money exchanges hands between the commissioning couple and the surrogate mother. Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj defended making homosexuals ineligible for surrogacy.
