【New Delhi/Seoul】The Narendra Modi government on the 24th of June suffered a diplomatic defeat when the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) turned down New Delhi’s bid to enter the club unless it were to sign the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
While New Delhi singled out China for putting “persistent” hurdles in India’s path, the issue turned into a political embarrassment for the PM and his government.
However China claimed that it had not opposed India’s membership, and that NSG sessions had only spoken broadly of non-NPT states. In an interaction with international media gathered to cover the NSG session in Seoul, Chinese lead negotiator and Director-General of the Arms Control division Wang Qun said that signing the NPT was “really an issue” for members. “Because for admission the NSG has 5 criteria for members, most noticeably the NPT, it is a must. This is not a rule set by China, this is the rule set by the NSG and reaffirmed by the international community,” Mr. Qun said.

【Washington】The US on the 25th of June said that there is "a path forward" for India to become a full member of the Nuclear Suppliers Group by the end of the year, hours after the group's plenary meeting ended in Seoul with no decision on India's membership in face of strong China-led opposition.
"We are confident that we have got a path forward by the end of this year," a top Obama administration official said. "It needs some work. But we are confident that India would be a full member of the (NSG) regime by the end of the year," the official told PTI on condition of anonymity.
