◆Tagore's ideas can guide China-India relations: Ma Zhanwu

【Kolkata】Chinese Consul General Ma Zhanwu has said values of the borderless bard's friendship, which Rabindranath Tagore had anthemed, can show the path to the new relationship between the two neighbouring countries. He also predicted that there will soon be more readers of Tagore in China than in India,
"Tagore's idea on China-India relationship could serve as a useful guide as we work to deepen mutual trust, enhance friendship and develop bilateral exchanges and cooperation," Zhanwu said. He said Tagore believed in Asian resurgence at a time when the West was dominant and Asians were looked down upon. "Tagore was the first Asian to be awarded the Nobel Prize in 1913. He gave us the courage that our message could also be useful and valid for the rest of the world," the diplomat told PTI.
It was for the first time yesterday (07-05-2016) that the Chinese consulate had celebrated Tagore's 155th birth anniversary in a big way with a conference on the bard's relationship with China where he had gone in 1924.
○China has deployed more troops near Indian border: Pentagon

【Washington】China has increased defence capabilities and deployed more troops along the Indian border, the Pentagon has said, as it warned of increasing Chinese military presence including bases in various parts of the world, particularly Pakistan.
Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence for East Asia Abraham M Denmark told reporters during a news conference here after Pentagon submitted its annual 2016 report to the US Congress on 'Military and Security Developments Involving the People's Republic of China'. However, Denmark said it is difficult to conclude on the real intention behind this.
"It is difficult to say how much of this is driven by internal considerations to maintain internal stability, and how much of it is an external consideration," he said in response to a question on China upgrading its military command in Tibet.
○Govt plans to build 55 new roads on China border

【New Delhi】The Centre plans to construct 55 new roads along the hilly terrain of the India-China border, even as government agencies struggle to complete 73 strategic roads in the region.
The 73 roads are also way behind schedule. The new links proposed by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), to augment the border infrastructure, would be in addition to already approved 27 roads under the MHA close to the border with an approximate length of 805 km at an estimated cost of Rs 1,937 crore.
The Ministry of Defence has given its “operational clearance” for the 55 roads. But both the home and defence ministries are finding it tough to complete the roads already approved by the government following the recommendations of the China Study Group under the Prime Minister’s Office, which identified 73 such roads.
