【Varanasi】With his government under attack over the dalit student's suicide in Hyderabad, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the 22nd of January said his government was committed to the welfare of Dalits, poor and oppressed.
At a function to distribute aides to differently-abled persons in his constituency, he referred to dalits but made no mention of the controversy over the suicide of a dalit research scholar in Hyderabad University over which two of his ministers have come under attack.
Modi said he is under tremendous attack all the time and attempts are made to pitchfork him in into controversies but he would not digress from his path of working for the poor.
○Hyderabad University revokes suspension of Dalit students
【Hyderabad】The University of Hyderabad on the 21st of January revoked the suspension of four Dalit students, four days after a fifth so disciplined, Ph.D. scholar Rohith Vemula, committed suicide and triggered nationwide protests.
The decision of the executive council came after student bodies and opposition political parties stepped up demands for resignation of of Union education minister Smriti Zubin Irani and Union labour minister Bandaru Dattatreya in this regard. The issue of suspension of these five, part of an Ambedkar Students Association in the university, took a serious turn after Rohith committed suicide in protest. Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal were among those who visited the campus and joined the student protest.
On the allegation that the expelled students had involved in "anti-national'' activities, Kejriwal said speaking about Ambedkar and fighting for Dalits were also nationalism.
Rohit, who was expelled from hostel as part of disciplinary measures along with four other students of ASA a couple of weeks ago, had allegedly committed suicide in the campus hostel on Sunday.
○Hyderabad varsity issue not Dalit versus non-Dalit: Irani
【New Delhi】Union Education Minister Smriti Irani on the 20th January addressed a press conference flanked by three ministers and claimed that a "malicious attempt" was being made to project the suicide of a dalit student in Hyderabad University as a dalit versus non-dalit caste battle which "passions" are being ignited.
After keeping a low profile for the last two days, she was at pains to project that the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) student, who was attacked in a student rivalry, belonged to the OBC (Other Backward Classes) community as was Union Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya, who had written a letter to her about the attack. She rejected allegations that her ministry's intervention through letters had led to the suicide of the student Rohith Vemula.
Contrary to the popular perception that it is the student wing of BJP, the ABVP is actually the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and was founded before the BJP, according to Wikipedia.
