【Patna】Nitish Kumar was on the 7th of February elected as Leader of the Janata Dal United, or JD(U) Legislature Party at a meeting called by party President Sharad Yadav to replace Jitan Ram Manjhi as Chief Minister of Bihar.
Kumar’s election brought the state back from the brink of a constitutional crisis, as Manjhi had recommended dissolution of the Bihar Assembly at a cabinet meeting earlier on Saturday. However, only seven ministers present at the meeting endorsed the proposal and 21 opposed it and proposed Manjhi’s mentor and former chief minister, Nitish Kumar, be brought back as CM. Manjhi’s refusal to accept this had led to a situation where Bihar, at one stage, had two claimants to the chief ministership.
○JDU accuses BJP of trying to engineer split within party
【New Delhi】Grappling with a crisis within, Janata Dal United (JDU) on the 8th of February accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of plotting a split in the party and said it was willing to parade 130 MLAs — more than the majority in the 233-member Bihar Assembly — before the Governor or the President in a show of strength.
Party spokesperson KC Tyagi suggested that Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi was working at the BJP’s behest and said he had no right to attend the NITI Aayog meeting in the national capital as he no longer enjoyed the confidence of the majority of MLAs after JD(U) lawmakers elected Nitish Kumar as their new leader in Patna yesterday. He said, “The fact is BJP President Amit Shah is working overtime to engineer a split in our party, like he is doing with the Trinamool Congress (TMC)."
