【New Delhi】The US is “primed to unlock” the potential of relations with India as part of its rebalance to Asia and the Pacific. US President Barack Obama sees India as a central pivot in unfolding new relationship between global powers.
Obama unveiled his second National Security Strategy (NSS: the first was issued in 2010) on the 7th of February, days after his historic second trip to India. It states, "India's potential, China's rise, and Russia's aggression all significantly impact the future of major power relations." The envisioned arrangement with India is elaborated in a section on America's "rebalance to Asia and the Pacific".
○NYT editorial slams Modi
【New Delhi】After U.S. President Barack Obama raised the issue of religious intolerance in India, The New York Times published a very strong editorial criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi for what it calls his “dangerous silence” on a series of communal events in the country.
The editorial, by the NYT editorial board, lists recent attacks on churches and reports of Ghar Vapsi or conversion and marks out the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) for its proposed conversions programme in Ayodhya in March this year, saying the group “was playing with fire.” “Mr. Modi’s continued silence before such troubling intolerance increasingly gives the impression that he either cannot or does not wish to control the fringe elements of the Hindu nationalist right,” the NYT editorial surmised.
○India’s nuclear liability law will not be amended: govt
【New Delhi】The Indian government on the 8th of February made it clear that India’s liability law will not be amended as it released the understanding reached with the U.S. recently under which foreign suppliers of equipment for the nuclear reactors cannot be sued by the victims in case of a mishap.
In a detailed paper on ‘frequently asked questions’ dealing with contentious issues including liability, compensation and right of recourse in case of a nuclear mishap, the External Affairs Ministry said, “There is no proposal to amend the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage (CLND) Act or the Rules.”
The Foreign suppliers of the reactors cannot be sued for the damages by victims of a nuclear accident but can be held liable by the operator who has the right of recourse that could be operationalised through the contract between the operator and the supplier, they said.
