【SRINAGAR】PM Narendra Modi has praised the people of Jammu & Kashmir for their historic participation in the first phase of the assembly elections that sent out a clear message to the world that the valley has rejected "bullets" to embrace "ballots".
Addressing election rallies in Udhampur and Poonch on the 28th November, Modi hoped the subsequent phases of the elections too will see heavy voting. The 15 assembly seats that went to polls in the first phase on the 25th November had registered 70%-72% voter turnout despite a boycott call .
The big ground at Battal in Udhampur, 60 km from Jammu, was packed to capacity with thousands turning up to hear Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ahead of the second phase of polls. Modi said: "The people of Jammu and Kashmir have shown their faith in democracy. Terrorists have been using guns and bullets to kill people, but the power of democracy was still alive in Jammu and Kashmir."
Modi did not talk about the ongoing border encounter in Arnia where the death toll has reached 11, including three soldiers.
○Modi seeks clear majority
【Udhampur】Addressing a massive rally in Udhampur on the 28th November, Prime Minister Narendra Modi skipped controversial issues such as the abrogation of Article 370 that accords Jammu and Kashmir special status and focussed instead on development, tourism and corruption.
Mr. Modi exhorted the people of J&K to bring the Bharatiya Janata Party to power in the Assembly with a clear majority to take the State on the path of development.
On the 25th November at Chiabasa, he also had asked the voters of Jharkhand to enable the BJP secure a majority in the Assembly elections for political stability.
○Impressive turnout in J&K and Jharkhand
【NEW DELHI】The first phase of Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir and Jharkhand on the 25th November witnessed a high turnout.
Deputy Election Commissioner Vinod Zutshi said that the 71.28 per cent polling recorded in J&K was probably the highest. Jharkhand saw 61.92 per cent voting in the 13 Assembly constituencies. Only minor incidents of violence were reported in the naxal-hit areas of western Jharkhand. In Chhatarpur seat of Palamu district, miscreants destroyed control units of voting machines in two booths. "Re-polling is likely to be ordered in those booths as votes had been cast in those machines," Deputy Election Commissioner Umesh Sinha said. No polling took place in three booths in a single location in Chatra, where a 12-kg improvised explosive device was recovered.
