【New Delhi】Having decided to increase the FDI cap in defence sector to 49 per cent, India on the 8th of August said it wants to work closely with the US in developing its indigenous military hardware manufacturing industry and go for joint production of equipment.
At a delegation-level meeting between Defence Minister Arun Jaitley and his American counterpart Chuck Hagel, the two countries agreed to enhance their cooperation in joint production and development of defence equipment.
The ministry of defence (MoD) announced on the 8th August that visiting US Defence Secretary, Chuck Hagel, and India's defence minister, Arun Jaitley, had "decided to take steps for the extension of the New Framework for the United States - India defence relationship, well before it expires in July 2015."
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on that day told visiting US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel that India would like to work with US defence majors on a joint development and co-production model as part of Delhi's efforts to achieve self-reliance and reduce arms import.

【Nay Pyi Taw】External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj arrived here on the evening of the 8th August on a four-day visit to attend three key multilateral forums including India-ASEAN Foreign Ministers meeting, East Asia Summit (EAS) and the Asean Regional Forum (ARF), besides bilateral talks with her counterparts from China, Australia and other nations.
The ASEAN-India Ministerial meeting is likely to push for taking the relationship to next level by expanding trade and investment and exploring new areas of cooperation. The EAS meeting is likely to focus on cooperation in the areas of energy, education, disaster management, food security and improving connectivity. In the ARF conference, issues relating to peace and security in the region will be discussed.

【New Delhi】India has reason to cheer from the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) meeting at Myanmar beginning on the 9th August with Philippines all set to present Triple Action Plan (TAP) to resolve territorial disputes involving few Southeast Asian countries and China in South China Sea (SCS) region where Delhi has significant oil investments.
Delhi, which has made clear that it will continue its presence in the oil blocks offered to it by Vietnam in the SCS region despite Beijing's pressure, would receive further boost by Philippines TAP at ARF on Aug 9-10. Besides all ten ASEAN countries, India, China, USA, Russia, Australia, Japan, South Korea, EU, Pakistan and Bangladesh are among 27 members of the ARF that focuses on security in the region.
