◆Modi to address UN General Assembly on Sept. 27
【United Nations】Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to address the United Nations General Assembly on September 27, giving his first global speech to an audience of nearly 200 world leaders and foreign ministers at the annual gathering of the world body’s policymaking organ.
According to a first provisional list of speakers released here, India’s “Head of Government” is scheduled to address the General Debate of the 69th Session of the UN General Assembly on the morning of September 27.
○Modi's US visit to boost bilateral investment treaty
【New Delhi】The negotiation between India and US for a Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) is set to gain momentum in the coming weeks ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with American President Barack Obama in Washington DC in September.
With the Ministry of Finance close to finalising India’s new model text for the BIT (also known as Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement or BIPPA), New Delhi and Washington DC will review progress of the negotiation on the proposed treaty during the fifth India-US strategic dialogue scheduled to be held early next week
American Secretary of State John Kerry and Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker will arrive in New Delhi on the 29th July to hold talks with External Affairs Minister and Finance Minister . Trade and economy constitute one of the five pillars of the annual strategic dialogue, which covers the entire gamut of the India-US ties.
○Narendra Modi visa issue ‘a thing of past’: Nisha Desai Biswal
【Washington】Now that US President Barack Obama has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the White House, the visa issue associated with him is a thing of past, a top American official has said.
Assistant secretary of state for south and central Asia Nisha Desai Biswal told lawmakers at a Congressional hearing on the 24th July that the Obama administration is looking forward to welcoming Modi in Washington in September. “When the President invited Prime Minister Modi and welcomed him to come to the United States, that he did so knowing that a visa would be granted for him to be able to do that, and we look forward to that,” she said.
○Differences came out during Narendra Modi-Xi Jinping meet
【New Delhi】Longstanding differences between India and China came to the fore when Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met at Fortaleza a day ahead of the BRICS Summit in Brazil.
While China showed interest in supporting India's mega infrastructure projects, differences over each other's strategic interests in the South China Sea region and Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) cropped up in the 80-minute meeting, an official said. When the Chinese side raised the issue of India's presence in the oil blocks in the South China Sea region, the Indian negotiators flagged concerns over China's support to a railway project in the PoK.
