【Review】Jesus was a Palestinian messenger of hope and a role model for Palestinians. As we Palestinians strive for our freedom two millennia later, we do our best to follow his example. We work with hope, seeking justice, in order to achieve a lasting peace.
○Abbas' Christmas message
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas meant, when he made the above message on Christmas Eve last year, that every Palestinian, regardless of his religion was Muslim, Jew or Christian, was willing to strive for their freedom to do his best to follow Jesus' example and to work with hope, seeking justice, in order to achieve a lasting peace.
He also expressed hope that the visit of Pope Francis to the Holy Land would be "a good opportunity for Christians from all over the world to come closer to their sisters and brothers in Palestine, and for His Holiness to spread the message of justice and peace for the Palestinians, as for all peoples of the world."
○Pope Francis' invitation
During the last month, after visiting the golden-topped Dome of the Rock shrine on the hilltop compound that lies at the heart of decades of Israel-Arab tensions and praying at the nearby Western Wall, Francis embraced Rabbi Abraham Skorka and Omar Abboud, a leader of Argentina's Muslim community, both of whom joined Francis on his official delegation in a potent symbol of interfaith friendship. In addition, Francis made a surprise invitation to Israeli president Shimon Peres and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to come to the Vatican to pray for peace.
○Jesus is a role model for all of us
Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (John 8:31-32) Jesus wants us to return to the Word, which was with God, and was God in the beginning (John 1:1), and to remain on it where is neither Jew nor Muslim nor Christian.
If all of us, Jews, Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Hindus, followers of other religions and Atheists too, decide to strive for their freedom to do their best to follow Jesus' example and to work with hope, seeking justice, in order to achieve a lasting peace, the world lasting peace will be realized immediately, without need to wait another 2000 years.
Meanwhile Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, "Jesus was here, in this land. He spoke Hebrew," at the beginning of his meeting with Francis. "He was speaking Aramaic," the pope corrected, smiling. "He spoke Aramaic, and he also knew Hebrew," Netanyahu fired back, according to the reports.
