【New Delhi】Narendra Modi, who was formally elected the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) parliamentary party and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), will take oath as Prime Minister on May 26, BJP chief Rajnath Singh said today.
NDA leaders led by L K Advani met President Pranab Mukherjee to convey support to the Narendra Modi-led government. Singh said BJP had support letters of 10 allies of the NDA which includes 335 MPs.
Despite the BJP getting majority on its own in the Lok Sabha with an impressive tally of 284 seats and the alliance it leads forming 61% of the crucial Lower House, the Narendra Modi government will not have secured a lead in the 245-member Rajya Sabha before 2016. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that its reform-oriented legislative agenda would suffer, analysts said.
Meanwhile, analysis of affidavits filed by the winners suggests voters don't mind electing candidates with criminal cases and money power. A third of the candidates have criminal cases and more than two-thirds of the candidates are millionaires
