【New Delhi】The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday launched a multi-pronged coordinated political onslaught on Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, which stood out for both its planning and audacity.
BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi stormed Amethi barely an hour before the end of campaigning on Monday, giving no time to the Gandhis to launch a counter attack and not only broke an “unwritten code” – not campaigning in an adversary's constituency – but also upped the ante by making the electoral battle in Amethi a “prestige issue.”.
The BJP also released a pamphlet titled 'Amethi's untold story' to question the development of the constituency held by the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty since Independence.
Yashwant Sinha, a senior BJP leader and the former finance minister, said on Monday in the national capital, "Rahul's attendance in Parliament was a mere 42.9 per cent for 2009-2014. His performance was below par if compared with the average performance of other Lower House members whose average attendance was 76 per cent." Yashwant Sinha wanted to know what effort the Gandhi scion had invested for the development of his constituency, held by the family for the last 37 years.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Monday attacked BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi for his speech in Amethi, saying he had insulted her "martyred" father Rajiv Gandhi and people of the constituency will not forgive him for this. Priyanka Gandhi, daughter of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, said in a statement that the party's booth workers in Amethi will give a reply to the "low level politics".
○Govt scraps move to appoint probe panel judge in Snoopgate
【New Delhi】Under pressure from its allies, the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) has had to go on the backfoot over its much-vaunted claims of appointing a judge to head the Commission set up to probe the Gujarat “snoopgate” case, the snooping on a young woman by Gujarat police allegedly at the instance of Chief Minister Narendra Modi, before May 16.
This comes a day after the Nationalist Congress Party and the National Conference questioned the need for appointing a judge to head the inquiry when only days are left for the formation of a new government.
