【Chennai】The defence system requirements for the country is opening up an opportunity of $150 billion for the industry in the next five years, said A Sivathanu Pillai, chief controller (R&D), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and CEO & managing director of BrahMos Aerospace Pvt Ltd. Out of this, over $100 billion opportunity is for the Indian companies.
"The items in which the opportunity emerges include the combat aircraft, land-based systems such as artillery and infantry and sea-based systems," said Pillai, while addressing the 5th edition of Tamil Nadu Manufacturing Summit, organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). The figure is arrived at based on the main orders expected during the period, he said. Further, the defence procurement policy, which gives preference to the Indian manufacturers. The strategic and complex security systems has to be made only in India.
○Night trial of Agni-I missile put off
【Bhubaneswar】The first night trial of Agni-I ballistic missile has been postponed indefinitely for the second time, a defence official said Thursday.
The missile was to be tested for the first time for night launch Tuesday by the Strategic Forces Command as part of user trial from the Wheeler Island off the coast near Dhamra in Bhadrak district in Odisha, 170 km from state capital Bhubaneswar. But it was put off for a day initially for some technical glitches. It was again deferred indefinitely as the glitches persisted.
