【New Delhi】A fortnight after his party's splendid debut in the Delhi Assembly elections, Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal met the Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung to stake the claim to form the next government in the national Capital on Monday, ending the political impasse brought about by the fractured December 8 verdict.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) got 32 seats, the Congress 8 and others two. The AAP finished second in the election with 28 seats, eight short of a clear majority in the 70-member House. The Chief Minister-in-waiting said the Congress would lend outside support to his government.
The former chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday also clarified the Congress was providing "outside support and not unconditional support".
Mr. Kejriwal, who at 44 will be Delhi's youngest Chief Minister, will be sworn in at Ram Lila Maidan, in keeping with the 'pro-people' spirit of his party and the bonhomie witnessed during its election campaign.
When the AAP had decided to take a plunge into electoral politics and Kejriwal announced he would challenge the then chief minister Sheila Dikshit on her home turf, few would have thought Kejriwal would even win his own Assembly seat.
The AAP's first-ever stint in power comes in the backdrop of soaring expectations raised by its promise to deliver, clean, efficient and responsive governance.
Now AAP led by the former Indian Revenue Service officer is posing a threat to national parties like the Congress and the BJP in the coming Lok Sabha elections.
However AAP may have to hold his horses about lower electricity bills as new chief minister Arvind Kejriwal may find it difficult to fulfil his promise, say industry players and experts.
While Delhiites lapped up the populist promise, a 50 per cent cut in electricity prices, discoms in the city said it will be "nearly impossible" to lower the rates, given that the accumulated loss faced by them is as high as Rs 11,000 crore.
